Understanding Radon
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas released when elements such as uranium and radium break down in soil, rock, and groundwater. This gas is colourless and odourless, and can enter buildings through cracks in floors, gaps around service pipes, and other small openings.
Radon is the single largest source of natural background radiation for most people, accounting for around half of the radiation we’re exposed to in everyday life.
Why Bath Homeowners & Businesses Should Test for Radon
Bath (and North East Somerset) is recognised as an area with particularly high levels of naturally occurring radon. Because it cannot be seen or smelled, radon can build up indoors without you being aware.
Radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the UK, but the good news is it's completely manageable when you test and take action. The only reliable way to know whether your home or workplace has increased radon levels is through professional measurement and assessment, both of which our team at Better Indoors can support you with.
Our Approach to Long-Term Radon Mitigation
Founded back in 2013, our team of radon experts have surveyed and installed systems in 24,000+ properties across Bath and the rest of the UK, successfully reducing radon below the UK target levels. Here’s how we can help protect you and your family:
Radon Testing & Measurement
There are two main approaches to test for (and measure) radon levels in Bath properties: through passive sensors or professional-grade real-time sensors.
-
Passive Sensors are typically left in place for around three months to measure average radon levels over time. Results are formally recorded on the UKHSA radon database, providing an official benchmark for your property.
-
Professional Real-Time Monitoring conducted by our team deliver faster results and detailed insights into how radon levels fluctuate throughout the day and night. Providing more information than simply a long-term average, this approach highlights peaks, patterns and trends and shows the short-term effects of changes to ventilation and other influencing factors.

Long-Term Radon Mitigation Solutions
If the results from your radon test show high radon gas levels within your home (over 200 Bq/m³), we will advise you of the effective, long-lasting mitigation solutions that are available to you. This will either involve a Positive Pressure Ventilation system, a Sump Extraction system, or a combination of both.
-
Positive Pressure Ventilation: We install whole-house, loft, or wall-mounted Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) systems to create a gentle positive pressure and dilute radon at the source. Better Indoors has a large track record of PIV installs across high-radon regions.
-
Sump Extraction: For properties with voids or suitable sub-floor space, we install extraction sumps with fan stacks that draw radon gas directly from beneath the building before it can enter.
-
Combination of Both: In our experience, sump extraction on its own is not always the most effective solution. In many properties, the best results are achieved by combining Sump Extraction with Positive Pressure Ventilation to provide a more reliable reduction in radon levels.
Following a detailed assessment, we will recommend the most appropriate strategy for your property. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!
How Our Radon Mitigation Process Works
Interested in getting started with us? Here’s what to expect from start to finish:
1. Initial Consultation & Testing
We begin by reviewing any existing radon data or arranging professional testing from our experts to understand the levels within your property.
2. Property Assessment & System Design
We'll visit your home or business to understand how it's built and where radon might be getting in. Think of it as a health check for your property, where we look at everything from your basement to your loft. Using this information, we design a tailored mitigation plan suited to your property.
3. Professional Installation
Our experienced engineers install the recommended system - whether that’s Positive Input Ventilation, Sump extraction, or a combined approach - with minimal disruption.
4. Post-Installation Follow-Up
After installation, we carry out follow-up testing to confirm radon levels have been successfully reduced and the system is performing as intended.

FAQs
The cost of a radon survey can vary depending on the size of the property and the type of testing required. Basic radon testing using passive sensors is the cheapest option, while more detailed professional surveys cost more but offer the best long-term benefits.

We regularly work across the city of Bath and beyond, conducting surveys in Bathampton, Saltford, Keynsham, Combe Down, and Charlcombe. Simply let us know where you’re based, and we’ll arrange a suitable time to visit.
Radon can be more common in Bath because of the area’s natural geology. Certain types of rock beneath the ground, including limestone and nearby granite, contain small amounts of uranium, which naturally breaks down and releases radon gas.
As part of the South West of England, Bath sits within one of the areas where these ground conditions can allow higher levels of radon to occur.
Since Bath is regarded as more of a hotspot for radon, testing is advised. Although many homes and businesses won’t be affected, a passive or professional radon test is the only reliable way to understand whether you’re at risk or not.
The UK action level is 200 Bq/m³ for homes. If radon levels average at or above this, we recommend mitigation strategies to protect your long-term lung health.
Passive tests take 3 months to gather a strong sample of data. However, our real-time surveys give reliable diagnostics in 1 to 4 hours, followed by a findings report soon after.
Mitigation installation times vary by solution, but don’t worry – we’ll give you an accurate timeframe when discussing your options.
Our award-winning PIV systems are designed to be energy efficient. When correctly installed, they should not cause a noticeable increase in heating costs, while still maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures and effectively reducing radon levels.
Most installations are straightforward and completed with minimal disruption to your home or business. We keep working areas tidy, and aim to complete installations as quickly as possible.
Start times depend on availability and whether testing is needed first, but we aim to schedule surveys promptly and begin mitigation as soon as results and designs are confirmed.
Yes. If you rent, you should obtain your landlord’s permission before testing or installing mitigation, as changes to ventilation or structure may be required. We are happy to speak directly to landlords about the importance of what we do.
Effective radon mitigation usually reassures buyers and can support property value, as it shows the issue has been professionally identified and managed.
