How to Remove Mould From Walls?

How to Remove Mould From Walls?

Mould on interior walls and other surfaces doesn’t just look and smell unpleasant. It is the bane of most households and is hazardous to your family's health. It can also develop a larger problem for your home if left untreated.

Fortunately it is possible to remove mould from surfaces and prevent it from growng back again but please remember if you only treat and remove the mould without addressing the root cause of the mould growth itself then it will return eventually.

Treatments that clean and remove mould from walls and other surfaces are not permanent. Treatments like anti mould paints are not permanent. They only treat the symptom of the problem rather than the problem itself which is the CAUSE of the mould growth. This fact is very poorly understood across the entire UK property industry and has been for decades. Every year ££££ is effectively wasted on symptom treatments like this that are usually purported as permanent solutions when in fact they are no such thing and must be repeated again and again at cost whilst leaving occupants continuously exposed to the serious health effects related to the root cause. Worryingly, with Awaab's Law coming into effect in October 2025, this sorry fact is set to continue given the short resolution timeframes of the legislation. Tenants and building occupant duty of care is best looked after when property managers are 100% focussed on permanent prevention rather than short term symptom fixes.

Why Does Mould Occur On Walls

Elevated indoor relative humidity is the main cause of mould growth. There are millions of microscopic mould spores on every surface in every house in the UK - and they will start to grow into the black mould deposits we can see if indoor environmental conditions are supportive of mould growth.
Like us, mould needs food and water to live. Indoor environments provide plenty of food which is not the issue. The key is the water or moisture. Mould can survive without liquid water as long as the relative humidity exceeds certain thresholds for sufficiently long periods. As indoor relative humidity levels differ from surface to surface depending on temperature and airborne moisture content these conditions are sometimes met - usually during the colder months and/or during rainfall when indoor relative humidity conditions are always higher. Therefore at the locations where the relative humidity swings above the mould growth thresholds for long enough the mould spores start to grow at these locations which is similar to watering plant seed and this phenomenon is unavoidable unless and until the factors that control the relative humidity are altered so the mould growth thresholds are no longer reached. This explans why indoor mould growth tends to stop in summer - because as the weather warms up the relative humidity falls which means the mould growth thresholds are no longer being reached.
Unfortunately the reason why millions of British properties suffer from mould and condensation is down to the methodology and performance of the various systems they were built with and in particular the extant ventilation strategy that directly affects the indoor relative humidity condition which more often than not actually contributes to mould growth despite the best efforts of occupants to open windows etc.

Tips To Remove Mould From Walls Safely:

– First and foremost, you need to protect your skin by wearing rubber gloves to avoid coming in contact with mould and mould removal sprays. Once you are done with the spraying and cleaning process, remove and clean your gloves.

– While cleaning mould on walls, ceilings and floors wear old clothes with long sleeves and when finished wash the clothes in HOT water.

– Properly ventilate the work area/s, by opening windows and doors. Wear a face mask to avoid inhaling mould spores and/or mould removal spray.

– Remove vulnerable persons from the property during the cleaning process. If this is not possible, segregate the person in a separate well ventilated room.
